Allen Augustine Burns, Jr., one of the oldest living natives of St. Simons Island, died at Hospice of the Golden Isles on Monday, Febbraio 20. He spent the last days of his life surrounded by his loving family and friends and in the care of God’s special angels, the nurses and staff of Hospice.
Allen was born on January 26, 1929 to Allen Augustine Burns, Sr. and Frances Postell Burns. He was a graduate of Glynn Academy. With the exception of his four years in the US Air Force with the 18th Fighter Group of the 67th Fighter Squadron (13th Air Force) in the Korean War, and his time in Atlanta while attending Georgia Tech, Allen spent his entire life on St. Simons. He was employed by Hercules Powder Company in Brunswick for 35 anni.
As a sixth generation resident of St. Simons, Allen remembered the days of shell roads when he knew every family on the Island. As a teenager, he delivered newspapers after school along a route that extended from 36th Street on Sea Island northward to the homes on Frederica Road including Glynn Haven and Harrington. Allen was the family historian and photographer, having restored generations of historic family photos that dated back to the days his family owned Kelvin Grove Plantation. He was a source for Island history for many writers.
Allen was an active and lifelong member of Christ Church Frederica where he served many terms on the vestry, having been both junior and senior warden. He also served several years as usher chair. As a young boy in the years before electricity reached the Church, he enjoyed cranking the organ by hand as the organist played.
Allen was an avid bird hunter and offshore fisherman. He raised many fine English setters and pointers for quail hunting and provided the main course for many renowned bird suppers that were a special treat for all invited. He also enjoyed gardening and watching the Braves win baseball games.
He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 57 anni, Angela Evans Burns, his son Allen A. Burns III and wife Gloria Singleton Burns, his two grandchildren, Elizabeth McLeod Burns and Allen A. Burns IV, his sister Zoann Burns and husband Oscar Covington, his sister-in-law Beverly Burns, and many nieces and nephews. E 'stato preceduto nella morte dai suoi genitori, Allen and Frances Burns, and his brother, Bobby Burns.
