“Granny Sugar,” “Help has come at last; you can close your eyes and rest.”
Mildred Catherine McQuaig Griffin, 95, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Enero 26, 2012 at Baptist Village.
Born in Manor, Georgia in 1916 to the late Donnie B. and Ethel Beland McQuaig, she loved that small town and always said if she ever won the lottery she would build houses for all her friends there and they would just visit and have fun in God’s Manor County. (Bet that’s what they are doing now, but in Heaven!)
In Manor, she met the love of her life, L.D. Grifo; she was his Edith Bunker. Anything that man wanted, she saw that he got. They had a wonderful life together.
She was a cornerstone in the Emerson Park Community where she raised her family after World War II. She was also an entrepreneur, owning and running a charming dress outlet in Emerson Park during the early 1960’s that was quite successful.
She was a strong, loving matriarch who served God and her family with all her heart. She gave of herself in every way. Even her nieces and nephews felt that love through the years. Mother’s house was lovingly called “Granny Sugars Boarding House”, because grandchildren were always in and out.
She always said her money was blessed because it never ran out when she needed it to give; it was always found in a pocket, a drawer, or a box. She would ask, “Did you put it there?” No! Would always be our answer and she would reply – “God did it again!” You can’t out give God was something she always taught.
She was a devoted wife and loving Mother and Grandmother who instilled strong family values in everyone. She will always be remembered for her loving, giving spirit that she showed to everyone who knew her.
Preceding her in death with great and never-ending love besides her parents was her husband, Leon Dawson (L.D.) Grifo, her precious daughter, Marjorie Ethel Lee, Step-Mother, Abby Reid McQuaig, a sister Donnie Reid Douglas and three brothers, John B. “J.B.” McQuaig, Charles McQuaig and Loren McQuaig.
She is survived by a daughter, Nona “Babe” Christine McLeod (Farrell) Waycross, a special son-in-law, Jerry Hugh Lee, who was the son she always wanted and his wife Jeanette Lee whom she took into her family with love.
Four grandsons Jerald Lee (Centavo) Blackshear, James “Proyecto de ley” William Hayman, Waycross, Robert Wesley “Wes” Hayman (Mujer), Missouri, and Skip Sasser, Waycross. One brother, Winston McQuaig ( Fredye), Columbus, Georgia, 11 great grand children Aaron Hayman, Jessica Hayman Tyre, Leanna Hayman, Amy Hayman, Cody Hayman, Jake Hayman, Jesse Lee, Justin Lee, April Sasser, David Thornton and Carter Sasser. One great-great grandson Cameron Griffin Tyre and one special cousin, Wanell Tanner Bennett, plus all the angels at Baptist Village who cared for her with all their skill but most of all their love.
She was a devoted member of Kettle Creek Church for 16 years and before that a lifetime at Booth Church at Manor. She attended Booth Church until she could no longer drive.
