Mr. Charles Leon “Charlie” Jernigan, age 66, passed away in Savannah, September 9, 2011, following an extended illness.

Mr. Jernigan was born December 28, 1944, in Coffee County.     He was an avid track star and football player at Coffee High School.  He was a graduate of Furman University. Mr. Jernigan attended the St. Illa Baptist Church of Douglas. He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Jernigan and his beloved daughter, Melissa Garay.

Survivors include his loving compassionate friend and wife, Lana B. Jernigan; mother, Mr. Ivylyn Jernigan of Douglas; one brother, Allen (Peggy) Jernigan of Douglas; one sister, Susan (Jerry) Griffin of Fitzgerald; and several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held at the St. Illa Baptist Church of Douglas on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Jimmy McMillan conducted the services.  Songs were “Jesus, Jesus” and “Amazing Grace” performed by the St. Illa Church Choir.
