Donald Wesley Tyson Sr., 69, of Tifton, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at his residence.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eastside Baptist Church in Tifton with Dr. Billy Southerland, interim pastor of Eastside Baptist Church, and the Rev. Bill Harrell, senior pastor of Abilene Baptist Church, Martinez, officiating.  Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors.

Pallbearers will be Brad Tyson, Andrew Tyson, Mike O’Hara, Jimmy Castleberry, Donnie Cooper and Darrell McKee.  Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Eastside Baptist Church.

Born Oct. 1, 1941, in the Brighton Community to B. B. Tyson Sr., and Evelyn Cravey Tyson, both deceased, he was also preceded in death by a brother, B. B. Tyson Jr.

Mr. Tyson served the Tifton community as a volunteer police officer and as an emergency medical technician.  He retired from the Coastal Plain Experiment Station as a USDA research technician.  He loved reading and was a lifelong student of horticulture.  He enjoyed NASCAR, fishing and wrestling, and loved his dogs, Duke and Duchess.  Mr. Tyson was known throughout the Tiftarea for growing beautiful flowers and vegetables which he loved to give away to friends and neighbors.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Tyson was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Mr. Tyson is survived by his wife, to whom he had been married 48 years, Faith Brantley Tyson of Tifton; his children, Dr. Donald W. Tyson Jr., and Sheila S. Tyson of Athens, and Beth Tyson Broadwater and Dr. Stephen R. Broadwater of Augusta; his grandchildren, Andrew Tyson, Sarah Tyson, Madison Broadwater and Emily Kate Broadwater; and his brothers and sisters, Jimmy Tyson of Tifton, Wilbur Tyson of Irwin County, Dixie Tyson Towery of Tifton, Eileen Tyson Brogdon of Omega and Barbara Tyson Newsome of Eatonton.
