Owen Hinton Jr., 82, of Jasper, FL, passed away Monday, November 14, 2011, at Haven Hospice in Lake City, FL. Mr. Hinton was born on October 28, 1929 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Dr. Owen, Sr. and Cora Peaster Hinton. He graduated from Boy’s Catholic High School in North Augusta, SC. He served 4-1/2 years in the U.S. Navy. He was awarded a scholarship to study at the National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Mr. Hinton earned his B.S. Degree in Math and Science and his Master’s in Administration from Valdosta State College. He began his career in education teaching in Clyattville, GA. He later taught at North Hamilton Elementary School for many years and then served as principal there for 11 years. In 1984, Mr. Hinton was elected Hamilton County Superintendent of Schools and served in that capacity for 8 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Lorrie Hinton Joeris. Survivors include Sybil Strickland Hinton, his wife of 56 years; two sons, Owen Hinton, III and James C. Hinton (Ann) of Jasper; four grandchildren, Leeann Hinton Combass (Chris), James C. Hinton Jr. (Brandie), Westen Joeris, and Elizabeth Joeris of Jasper; two brothers James H. Hinton (Elsie) of North Augusta, SC, and David Hinton (Christine) of Carrabelle, Florida; five great grandsons, Jackson Combass, Conner Hinton, Reed Hinton, Gavin Combass and Karson Hinton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
