William Drexel Whiddon, 83, formerly of Sumner died Tuesday April 10, 2012 at his residence in Metairie, LA.  A memorial graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday April 21, 2012 at the Sumner Cemetery with the Rev. Brent Whiddon officiating.  Mr. Whiddon was born to the late Green Dewey and Elizabeth Slappy Whiddon in Worth County. He graduated from Sumner High School and earned a degree from Berry College. While in high school, he set a state track record by running a 4 min. mile. Mr. Whiddon was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving 1950-1953, working on top secret radar equipment in fighter jets and bombers. He was employed with Martin Marietta for 10 years, five of which were with NASA during the Gemini and Saturn programs. He traveled to different states doing start-up and shut downs for nuclear plants, paper plants and had worked with NutraSweet. He spent a year in Saudi Arabia teaching nuclear plant students. He farmed for 10 years, was former mayor of Sumner. Mr. Whiddon enjoyed horticulture, and loved to hunt and fish. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.  Survivors include his wife of 29 years Peggy Perry Whiddon of Metairie, LA; sons, Gregory D. Whiddon, Kenneth L. Whiddon (Catherine); step sons, Edward Perry (Janet), Darrin Perry, Sr. (Ann Marie);; grandchildren G. Drexel Whiddon, Austin L. Whiddon; sister, Gussie “Jo” Lumsden; step grandchildren, Christine L, Elizabeth A., Jake & Eric Dunn, Sean, Amanda, Darrin, Jr., Brandon, Precious, Nathaniel & Hope and the mother of his children, R. Alyce Hurst Whiddon.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Whiddon was preceded in death by his siblings Gloria Patterson, Charlotte Campbell, Dewey Whiddon and Wayne Whiddon.
